This book is a comprehensive and novel approach to the subject of musical comedy, examining its various registers, from the joke, the parody and the stroke of wit to the highest stage of irony. Illustrated with numerous musical examples and their corresponding analyses, it ranges from the Baroque to the 20th century. Starting from the meticulous study of Mozart's musical joke and Verdi's opera Falstaff, the interest of the considerations developed throughout the text is increased by its multidisciplinary approach, which is reflected in two parallels with cinematographic language and painting.
