The Great Manipulator, a classic of Paul Preston's bibliography that Debate recovers in a new revised and expanded edition, is a concise and accessible biography of Francisco Franco, whose dictatorship marked much of the Spanish 20th century. Preston, perhaps the best connoisseur of this historical character, offers us a profile that reveals all facets of the dictator and presents him as a more complex figure than some want to accept: a man full of ambition, totally obsessed with controlling his own image and well aware of the power of propaganda.
