El erotismo

Bataille, Georges

The beings that reproduce, the reproduced beings, are beings that are different from each other, separated by an abyss, and constitute a fascinating discontinuity. But, like individuals who die alone in an unintelligible adventure, they retain the nostalgia for lost continuity. The sexual activity of reproduction, of which eroticism is one of the human forms, makes it possible to rediscover that continuity. At the moment the reproductive cells unite, a continuity is established between them to form a new being from their death. For its part, death, violent death, manifests this liberation effort at the very origin of human activities. But the desire for death calls into question the organization of communities founded on work and reason. From there arise the prohibitions, to what is opposed or, better, joins, a necessary overcoming of those prohibitions, its own transgression. War and hunting join incest or sacred orgy here.
