On July 8, 1822, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley drowned along with his friend Edward Williams when their ship sank during a sudden storm off the Tuscan coast. His wife, Mary Shelley, who had already suffered the death of two of their children, Clara and William, shortly before, had to face this new and heartbreaking duel in her life alone with their only surviving child, Percy Florence Shelley, who at that time he was three years old. Mary Shelley's poetry consists of a corpus of about twenty poems that, despite having been practically forgotten, houses jewels of such immense poetic quality as this extensive poem about Percy's death, hers chosen from her.
