El diablo de los buitres
Finalista del Los Angeles Times Book Prize
James, Marlon
The Devil of Vultures chronicles the epic brawl between two tormented parish priests, apparently only practitioners of the same creed, over the primacy of their ministry in a God-forsaken Jamaican backwater. In Gibbeah, where not a few women retain supernatural powers and some wretches guard unspeakable secrets with their lives, magic coexists with religion, and good and evil are rarely what they seem. The outcome of such an epic confrontation between two men of God, with trimmings worthy of a tropicalista tribute to The Duel of Joseph Conrad, explodes when the Preacher of Rum, Hector Bligh, is dragged from the top of his pulpit by whom, with apocalyptic fanfare , proclaims himself and calls York apostle. The latter tries to impose a church "of fire and brimstone", but with his merciless yoke of blood and prayer, all he achieves is to unleash a fight to the death for the soul of Gibbeah herself.
