First it was Little Women; then came A tree grows in Brooklyn; shortly after, The Best of Life, and finally, The Women's Room, a novel that was a scandal and an overwhelming success when it was published in 1977 and that continues to tell a lot about what life was like for women throughout 20th century. The person who speaks to us in these pages is a mature woman who, from her refuge in a small coastal town, remembers her days as a teenager, girlfriend, wife, mother, student and teacher during the 1950s and 1960s, a time when women dared to take a first step to break the rules that men had created for them. On this journey through time, she is accompanied by other women who doubt and fight, make mistakes and laugh together while their husbands and lovers look at them indignantly, without understanding that they are also on the battlefield. Today, more than forty years after its publication, The Women's Room arouses renewed interest, and history repeats itself even though the actors are different.
