El coste de la desigualdad

lecciones y advertencias de América Latina para el mundo

Sánchez-Ancochea, Diego

From the United States to the United Kingdom, from China to India, growing inequality has caused, in addition to an economic crisis, enormous social unrest and the rise of populist parties. This is why we urgently need a better understanding of the causes and costs of income gaps between rich and poor. This work uses the experience of Latin America, one of the most unequal regions in the world, to show how the concentration of wealth hinders economic growth, contributes to the lack of quality employment and weakens democracies. At the same time, low growth, policies of exclusion, social mistrust and violence have generated a vicious circle that reinforces inequality. Latin America provides a disturbing picture of what can happen in countries like Spain if we don't act quickly. Faced with this possibility, this book offers us different lessons to achieve income redistribution and build more equitable and politically involved societies.
