El Club de Lectura del Refugio Antiaéreo
Lyons, Annie
In 1911 Gertie and Harry founded Buchan Books, the bookstore where they met and fell in love. Without their intention, this place became an essential space in their community, but they did not know that years later it would become its saving pillar. It's 1938 and, after losing her husband, Gertie Buchan decides it's time to sell the bookstore she and her husband founded decades ago and retire to the coast. But as fascism takes hold in Europe, there are movements to rescue Jewish children and Gertie becomes convinced that she can take one in. When fifteen-year-old Hedy Fischer arrives with a small suitcase and very little English, Gertie's world is transformed. And as soon as the war begins, she and Hedy will face its horrors together. At first their relationship is strained, but when Gertie lends Hedy a copy of Jane Eyre that Harry gave her on her wedding day, they form a bond over her love of books. As German bombers loom over the London sky, the two decide to launch the bomb shelter book club, which provides books for people to read and discuss during the long hours of shelter. Over the next few months, you will see that books have the power to unite people of any age and create community in the darkest moments in History.
