El cementerio de Praga
Eco, Umberto
Paris, 1897. A man writes sitting at a table in a room crammed with furniture: he is Captain Simonini, a Piedmontese living in the French capital who from a very young age has dedicated himself to the noble art of creating false documents. An unscrupulous gentleman, misogynist and unrepentant glutton, the captain draws inspiration from Dumas and Eugène Sue's serials to attest to non-existent plots, foment intrigue or defame the great figures of European politics. Simonini works at the service of the highest bidder: if at first it was the Italian Government who paid for his impostures, then the orders from France and Prussia arrived, and even Hitler will end up taking advantage of his evil trades...
