El celador de Olot

El celador de Olot

Crowder, Matías

In 2010 all of Spain was shocked when it was learned that the eleven elderly people who had died in the last year and a half at the La Caritat nursing home had not died of disease or natural causes, as appeared on their death certificates. They had been killed by Joan Vila, also known since then as "the Angel of Death". The case immediately raised a media stir that called into question some of the practices of the nursing home, as well as the behavior of doctors when it comes to certifying the death of their patients. But, above all, it raised a question: why had Joan Vila, an apparently calm man, committed those terrible crimes? Matías Crowder manages with El celador de Olot to put a face to all the victims of Vila so that, from simple names on a form, they become people. And it also manages to answer the many questions that, over a decade, have been formulated around his figure: who is Joan Vila, what happened so that one day he began to indiscriminately murder the elderly and, in short, what hides in the mind of the most prolific murderer of the century in our country.
