Focused on the relationship of stories of particular events that occurred in the New Kingdom of Granada (which at that time had not yet been constituted as a viceroyalty), "El carnero" possesses, on the one hand, undoubted narrative features that anticipate the birth of the story and the Hispano-American novel; on the other, its author uses official documents and a bibliography that relate the text to historiographical genres and frame it in the context of the second generation of chronicles of the Indies, in addition to which he resorts to dialogic techniques that resemble proposals of a dramatic nature. , with resources reminiscent of one of the theater masters of the Spanish Golden Age. For all these reasons, it is one of the most original and unclassifiable works of all colonial literature and represents an essential text for the history of Colombia.
