Riley is eleven years old and believes in Whispers: magical fairies who grant you wishes if you pay tribute to them. And Riley has many wishes: he wants the bullies at school to stop bothering him; he wants Dylan, the eighth grader he likes, to like him, and he wants to stop wetting the bed, too. But most of all, Riley wants his mother to come home. She disappeared a few months ago, and he is determined to solve the case. He even meets with Frank, a detective, to go over his witness statement over and over again. Frustrated by the lack of progress in the investigation, Riley decides to take care of the matter himself. So he goes camping with his friend Gary to find the Whispers and ask them to bring his mother back home. What Riley does not imagine is that this trip will change her mind and his beliefs forever.
