El bandolerismo en España
Alcalá, César
The first news that we know of the bandits arise in the sixteenth century. These appeared in those areas that had very specific characteristics so that they could move freely and without being harassed by the forces of order, that is, the mountains, the perfect setting for looting and robbery. There is a lot of literature about them, in fact the French and English romantic writers mythologized many bandits in their works. And Spanish authors such as Lope de Vega and Cervantes also contributed to the myth. Thanks to them, fictional characters such as Perot lo Lladre, Joan de Serrallonga, José María el Tempranillo or Luis Candelas have entered the popular imagination. And not only men, but also bandit or mountain women like La Tuerta, Pepa la Loba or La Manola entered that imaginary. Even television helped create the character of Curro Jiménez who, although he existed, his life was less romantic than that of the fictional character.
