In his entire career as a commander of the River Police, Monk had never seen a more gruesome crime scene: the owner of a Hungarian warehouse lies dead in the middle of his office covered in blood, his chest pierced by a bayonet and mysteriously surrounded by seventeen candles, their wicks dipped in blood. Suspecting that the murder may be motivated by ethnic bias, Monk turns to the Hungarian community in London for clues. With the help of his wife, former nurse Hester, who is dealing with a traumatized war veteran possibly involved in the killings, Monk will combat mistrust, hostility and threats from the very people he is trying to protect. As the number of bodies multiplies, so does the resistance to the police. In a wild race against the killer's epidemic of terror, Monk must be more relentless than ever.
