In the rain-swept shantytowns of Excelsis, mercenary Niksar Astaboras turns to alcohol to carry on with a life that no longer has meaning. He cares little for the war waged by humans and monsters outside the city walls, despite the omens that predict the progress of the threat. Leaving the shelter of civilization means certain death, and life is short enough in the Realm of Beasts. But death approaches Excelsis. The forces of Destruction are on the march, and each of their thunderous footsteps causes an earthquake in the kingdom. In the wilds, a sinister new foe crushes even the mighty Stormcast Eternals. However, when all seems lost, an unexpected paladin (inextricably linked to Niksar) appears, leading the crusade into the very heart of darkness. Entangled in his harrowing journey, Niksar is forced to choose between loyalty and the chance to survive, and the dilemma leads him to discover what he is made of in the most virulent battle for dominance.
