Diplomacia
historia y presente
Manfredi Sánchez, Juan Luis
Diplomacy is the international political activity par excellence, exercised through a professional and bureaucratized body of universal recognition. The five classic functions of diplomacy are present in each global act or decision: representation, protection of interests, negotiation, gathering information and promoting friendly relations. Along with norms and conventions, diplomacy is governed by ethical principles and foundations that allow coexistence between adversary political systems and regimes. Diplomacy is the human response to the conduct and management of international affairs according to a political ideology. In the last decade, diplomacy has been transformed. Given the complexity and uncertainty of globalization, communication, culture, science, economics or journalism have been added to the compendium of specialized actions of diplomacy. The weight of international public opinion has not stopped growing, whether through global television or social networks. On the other hand, a new catalog of actors uses the techniques and methods of the profession to defend their interests and take advantage of globalization. Multinationals, global cities, non-governmental organizations and revolutionary groups have adopted diplomatic customs to achieve their goals. In short, diplomacy has not stopped reinventing itself to remain in the forefront of international political action. Now, in the new post-pandemic environment, its activity has grown. There are winds of change in the emerging world order, but whatever the end result, male and female diplomats will be an essential profession in international relations.
