Dios, patria y muerte
el fútbol en la guerra de los Balcanes
Mariottini, Diego
God, country and death tells a story of football and blood: the story of how the ball became the fateful protagonist of a fratricidal and atrocious war. It describes the disturbing career of Zeljko Raznatovic "Arkan", one of the most ruthless criminals of the 20th century, and at the same time offers an exhaustive panoramic look at the Yugoslav conflict, noting precisely these deadly connections between sport and the war drift that led to in the dissolution of Yugoslavia. In fact, Arkan himself consolidated and exercised his power through football, apparently an innocuous game unrelated to politics that, however, has been used by regimes of different ideologies as gasoline to ignite the flame of hatred: in the The darkest backdrops of the stadiums, in the most radical sectors of the fans, social marginalization, fanaticism and ignorance create an explosive mix from which, under certain circumstances, authentic criminal gangs can be born. Such was the case of the Arkan Tigers, the paramilitary group that emerged from the stands of the Red Star in Belgrade and that illustrates like no other the perverse relationship that can be established between the masses and sport.
