Ava leaves Dublin and moves to Hong Kong in search of exciting experiences. When she meets Julian, a resourceful British banker, the possibility of a life of luxury opens up before her eyes and Ava finds herself ignoring her feminist leanings. Their relationship is practical and it works, until Julian tells Ava that he has to go to London for a few months. Then Edith, a Hong Kong lawyer, enters the scene who takes her to the theater and leaves tulips in the hallway. Drawn by her magnetism, Ava begins to want to be like her, and to want her. Although she is not clear that she should tell him who exactly Julian is, or vice versa.
