World War II, 1942. London is under constant threat of enemy attack. In the neighborhood of Bethnal Green, Nellie Morris considers herself lucky to be able to retain small remnants of normality: her family is unharmed, she works as an assistant to the mayor, and she can go out with her friends. But after a chance meeting with Ray, an American aviator, she decides to broaden her horizons and sets out to see the world. Just as the young woman begins this new and exciting life, a terrible accident in the middle of an air raid turns her life upside down.
