There was nothing special about the day Cushla and Michael met. But in Belfast, love, like life, is never too far from violence and death. And yet, the day they both met was destined to change their lives forever. Every morning people got up to go to work, school, church or the nearest pub, and every morning the paper carried news of another car bombing with casualties, of another man clubbed to death or left for dead. Words like booby trap, incendiary device, Molotov cocktail, rubber bullets, armored car, and Ulster vanguard movement had become commonplace in every schoolyard. In a city where fear and violence had become the only bargaining chip, that of Cushla and Michael will be a story forged and condemned under the protection of secrecy and silence.
