Since the #MeToo hashtag went viral, the silence surrounding harassment and sexual assault and abuse has been broken. But how has the interaction been between this global campaign and long-standing local activism? How has this movement developed in countries where women's rights are curtailed by repression or inequality? And what have been the repercussions inside and outside the internet, especially in contexts characterized by mistrust of justice? Awakening chronicles an interconnected movement that is changing the way women act together against sexual violence and discrimination. Focusing on some of the world's most challenging places to be a woman, such as Brazil, China, Egypt, Tunisia, Nigeria and Pakistan, but also on more egalitarian societies, such as Sweden, this work reveals various personal stories from different cultures and classes. diverse social groups to show us the courage of those who, motivated by the tools and strength of #MeToo, have decided to raise their voices even putting at risk not only their reputation, but also their lives.
