Crónica de la degradación democrática española

España 2017-2023: los años de la voladura institucional

Sánchez Baena, Guadalupe

The process of institutional and legislative degradation undertaken by the PSOE-Podemos coalition government with the help of its parliamentary partners, the Catalan and Basque nationalists, has placed Spanish democracy at one of its most critical moments since its birth in 1978. The Socialist Party, one of the protagonists of the Transition and the advent of the 1978 Constitution, has assumed both the methods of the radical left and the dialectic and the objectives of secessionism, which has resulted in a sort of peronization of Spain characterized by the systematic questioning of the legitimacy of counter-powers -especially the judiciary- and by the colonization of institutions, whose necessary neutrality has been relegated in favor of activism and militancy. In this essay, the lawyer and columnist Guadalupe Sánchez describes how, with the pandemic as a window of opportunity, democratic institutions have been transformed into government agencies, sentimental identity has been instrumentalized to monopolize public debate and has been installed in Spanish society. the populist and totalitarian idea that the vote legitimizes the majority to place itself above the law and despise the separation of powers.
