Cristo, el Dios visible
retorno a la cristología de la edad Patrística
Daley, Brian E.
The core of the Church's faith is the person of Christ. Every believer, in fidelity to tradition, unceasingly faces the challenge of giving reason for his faith. But it is up to theologians to investigate, analyze, and debate the most appropriate formulas. His task cannot be limited to settling abstract questions, but must also open himself and above all to make the essence of faith intelligible. For this, it is obligatory to know the Christology of the first centuries, establish its development and show its liturgical, pastoral and spiritual implications. In this process, the Christological formula of the Council of Chalcedon (5th century): "There must be confession to one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, the same perfect in divinity and the same perfect in humanity", cannot be understood first of all as an immutable and forever affirmation, but mainly as a result of a long reflection on the person of Christ and as a starting point for further analysis. The present work situates the Council of Chalcedon in a much broader and more complex historical context that allows us to better understand the antecedents that base its theology on Christ, as well as to understand the reception of Chalcedon in the following centuries from the thought of some of the main Fathers of the Church. In this tour, the reader is invited to follow in the footsteps of authors such as Irenaeus, Origen, Gregorio Nacianceno, Gregorio de Nisa, Agustín de Hipona or Juan Damasceno, whose contributions attest to the development of Christological doctrine in continuity with the apostolic tradition.
