Creep

They know us because they watch us. We have let them into our homes, we share our most intimate images and thoughts on the net. In Japan, Junya barely leaves her room, doesn't talk to anyone, and spends all day in front of the computer. He only leaves his house at night, and he does so to commit heinous acts, following instructions he finds on an obscure internet forum. For the first time, he feels that he is part of something important that helps him leave behind all the bullying and abuse that he suffered as a child. But now the executioner is him. In Germany, Fanni has no social life and her family despises her, so she seeks solace by watching other people through the security cameras of the company she works for. She also navigates the deepest web, where she gets into shady deals. By the time she realizes the magnitude of these, it will be too late. Junya and Fanni search the lives of strangers for the things they have lost in their lives: control, belonging, liberation. And in doing so, they cross boundaries that have long ceased to apply to themselves. Creep is a novel as shocking as it is relentless in its vision of how digital hypermodernism deforms us and what we are capable of doing to escape the darkness that resides within us.
