Contra Armada

la mayor victoria de España sobre Inglaterra

Gorrochategui Santos, Luis

Many works have studied the Invincible Armada and its impact on the history of Europe, but there is an episode related to it that is hardly known: a year later, in 1589, England launched a fleet of superior proportions against Spain: the Contra Navy. After being repelled in La Coruña by the tenacious resistance that will elevate María Pita, the Contra Armada will be finished off in Lisbon by land and sea, leading to a catastrophe that doubled the losses of its predecessor and changed the sign of the war, allowing Spain continue to dominate the oceans. This book, based on unpublished documents from Spanish archives, reconstructs day by day, and for the first time, the destiny of that company. And its author, the historian Luis Gorrochategui, tries to shed light on why two similar episodes have received such disparate treatments.
