Consum preferent
8è Premi Llibres Anagrama de Novel·la, 2023
Genovart, Andrea
Alba, the narrator of this story, is part of a generation that tries to set foot on dry land in a city that makes water. The generation is the one that is now on the verge of thirties and too bad to leave youth behind amid the contradictions of constantly having to balance between precarious jobs and the inert guilt of being part of the first world, between emerging feminism and crazy relationships, between the need to battle with the same forces against the elements and against herself. The city is this contemporary Barcelona which, in its pretense of modernity, ends up becoming the definitive antagonist, and where human communication becomes increasingly uncertain and ghostly. With a raw and unfiltered voice, the pages of Consum preferent are full of a caustic humor that works equally as satire and as a scourge, and with a bold linguistic proposal in the service of a scathing and self-destructive narrative.
