It is 16-year-old Edie who finds her mother Marienne hanging from an old skipping rope in the middle of the room, a puddle of urine on the floor, almost dead. Upstairs, 14-year-old Mae had strangely noticed nothing, immersed in one of her transits, often caused by being too attentive to her mother's dark moods. After Marianne is admitted to a psychiatric hospital, Edie and Mae move to New York with their father, Dennis, a civil rights activist and cult literary author who abandoned them twelve years ago and with whom they have not had any contact. One falls at her feet, the other remains loyal to her mother, and together we will discover what happened between the parents and how relationships between them evolve.
