Spensa's life as a member of the Defiant Defense Force is far from ordinary. She proved to be one of the best starfighter pilots in the human enclave of Detritus and saved her people from extermination at the hands of the Krells, the enigmatic alien species that had held them captive for decades. To make matters worse, she traveled light-years away from her home as an infiltrated spy in the Supremacy, to a place where she discovered there was an entire galaxy beyond her small and desolate home planet. Now the Supremacy, the galactic government bent on dominating all human life, has unleashed a war on a galactic scale. And Spensa has seen the weapons she intends to use to end it: sappers, ancient and enigmatic alien forces that can lay waste to entire star systems in an instant. Spensa knows that no matter how many pilots the FDD has, there is no way to defeat that predator. However, Spensa is cytonic. She faced a sapper and sensed something eerily familiar about him.
