Cenizas

XXXI Premio Tiflos de Cuento

Cortés Amunárriz, Juana

Ash is the gray powder that remains after complete combustion: alkaline and earth salts, silica and metal oxides. And these stories are also made of ash, as it becomes a metaphor to tell the fire, the collapse, the fall of the beams that support the characters. There are some love stories that are dying, or maybe they have always been dead, like "Ada", about that young couple in a cemetery in Rome. Other stories tell us about the loss and the grief necessary to overcome the pain of death that devastates everything, such as "La Bahia Roja" or "Carne". There is also helplessness, abandonment, loneliness. Yet bodies shudder with desire, succumb to attraction; they dream, vibrate and squirm and moan because they are alive. Despite the fact that his future is none other than to turn to dust and ashes. Juana Cortés Amunarriz traces in these stories a path that is as winding and tortuous as it is vivid and, why not, hopeful. Because although death is the end of her, there is a path to follow until she reaches it, and she knows well how to show it to us, in a direct but also heartfelt way. Unforgettable.
