Casas y tumbas
Atxaga, Bernardo
In a bakery in Ugarte, in the Basque Country, a boy who has returned without speaking from a boarding school in the south of France one summer recovers the words thanks to his friendship with two twin brothers and to something strange that the three discover in the waters of the channel that comes down from the mountain. The Franco dictatorship is reaching its last days. Everything is changing in Ugarte and also in the El Pardo barracks where, shortly before, Eliseo, Donato, Celso and Caloco try to train a magpie and circumvent the hunting preserve reserved for the powerful. Theirs was also a story of friendship, with its fair dose of unconsciousness, rebellion and tragedy. Years later, union-sponsored strikes shake Ugarte's mining industry. It is now the turbulent eighties, and Elisha and the twins are involved in a plot of revenge, devised by the engineer Antoine, who seems to be typical of the black genre. Time passes quickly and transforms everything from outside: music arrives, television with its realities, email, although inside the protagonists of this story the silences, secrets, threats remain intact ... No it is more than life, which runs like threads of water between the stones. But it advances.
