Cartas de la guerra

correspondencia desde Angola

Antunes, António Lobo

In January 1971, a recently married young Portuguese doctor named António Lobo Antunes left his four-month-pregnant wife in Lisbon after being called up and assigned to the colonial war in Angola. There, in the midst of an extremely harsh conflict, surrounded by the same atrocities of the Algerian or Vietnam wars, the budding writer found in his letters to his wife a way to escape from his surroundings and keep in touch. with a more pleasant reality: that of love for his wife and for the daughter about to be born. They are private, intimate letters, written only for very specific eyes. However, this extraordinary document allows for many different readings. The chronicle of one of the bloodiest and most unknown decolonization wars; the expression of a first love, intense and absolute; the formation of a writer who would eventually become an indisputable reference in contemporary European literature.
