Letter to an old friend and other stories is composed of the seven most representative autobiographical and confessional texts of Ry?nosuke Akutagawa, written in the last three years of his life. In this last stage, the author lived besieged by a series of physical and mental problems that led him to commit suicide on July 27, 1927, aged only thirty-five. Apart from the indisputable testimonial value, these texts also have great literary, historical and social value, insofar as they reflect the altered mental state in which one of the most brilliant authors of his generation lived, caused by the tension between tradition and modernity that affected the Japanese intellectuals of the time.
