The admiralty has decreed that the Spanish ship that Captain Jack Aubrey managed to capture must be returned to its owner. Meanwhile, while waiting to be assigned a new ship, Aubrey spends some time in the English countryside while seeking to consolidate the tempestuous romance with the woman who will become the woman of his life... until he must flee the country to avoid being imprisoned for debt. Once in France, accompanied by his inseparable friend Stephen Maturin, he will find himself in the middle of the war that Napoleon has just declared, and they will be forced to use their wits to get out alive.
