The Italian Giacomo Leopardi is one of the greatest writers of European Romanticism. All his poetic work, the result of a continuous work of almost eighteen years, are the thirty-six poems -idyllables and songs- and the five fragments collected in the Songs, one of the great books of poetry of all time. Leopardi, who initially alternates poems with a civil and heroic theme and a classicizing tone with poems with autobiographical and everyday echoes written in a flatter tone, reaches a maturity that has exploded in recent years, in which each poem, in the words of Narcís Comadira, reaches "the intimate adequacy of language and meaning, growing inseparable, fixing at the same time, inextricably."
