el nuevo macartismo
Domingo, Carmen
Questioning the right to express an opinion in the 21st century and assuming that one part of the population believes that another part has the right to keep silent is a danger. Dialogue, even between opposing positions, is the basis of any democratic coexistence, something that seems to be forgotten in a social and cultural environment in which absolute truths abound. Should we keep watching Gone with the Wind, or do we remove it from all film libraries as racist? Is Lolita a literary masterpiece or are we banning Navokov for being a pedophile? Are we going after J.K. Rowling, author of Harry Potter, for her views on what a woman is? Do we burn the Tintin comics in order to defend the peoples colonized by the Europeans? Should a Snow White theme park ride be censored because she gets a non-consensual kiss from the prince? Can a white chef cook a Chinese stew or is it cultural appropriation? Does Dostoevsky's work deserve an analysis or do we censor everything from Russia? Can actors play characters who are not of the same race and gender as themselves? Do we prevent reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer because it uses the word 'black' despite the fact that Twain was an advocate of racial equality? The artistic, literary and cinematographic tradition, politics, history... Should they be able to be analyzed in their context? And who has the power to decide? We play a lot when choosing between freedom of expression, creativity or censorship. Also in accepting who can establish those criteria, today managed by that nameless power that is the RRSS. Because of prohibitions and harassment of those who question what is known as Woke Thought, goes the Culture of Cancellation.
