After the colossal Battle of the Burning Plains that first pitted the rebel forces of the Varden against Galbatorix, Eragon and Saphira realize that they are not yet strong enough: their lives had been in the hands of a new and unexpected enemy who I forgive them at the last moment. Eragon wants to continue his training, but his intention is thwarted by a web of ancient promises and oaths. The first is what Eragon did to his cousin Roran: rescuing his beloved, Katrina, from the clutches of King Galbatorix. However, this is only the first of his commitments.
