Breve historia de Tartessos

Carrillo González, Raquel

The history of Tartessos has belonged mainly to mythology, disseminated in different classical sources, information about this culture, advanced and heterogeneous, did not begin to be treated with true rigor until the 19th century and it was not until a few years ago that it began to be investigated in a majority way. Brief History of Tartessos intends to discover the history of this town, not from mythological sources, but based on the most recent archaeological investigations: its syncretic birth, its heyday with an economy based on trade and metallurgy and its decline, assimilated by an Iberian people: the turdetanos. The book presented to us by Raquel Carrillo is a true editorial novelty since there are no popularization works exclusively on Tartessos, the information today appears distributed in articles and generic manuals. Settled in the provinces of Huelva, Seville and Cádiz, the Tartessian people are the result of the mixing of Phoenicians and Greeks with the local warrior peoples. From an initial tribal organization they will know how to evolve into a hierarchical society with social strata characterized by their immobility. The author narrates that evolution that occurs between the 9th and 4th centuries BC. C. in depth: its territorial organization, its economy, its crafts and, above all, its complex religion and its funerary world, keys to understanding the social hierarchy experienced by Tartessos.
