Breve historia de la mitología sumeria
Menchero Hernández, María Isabel
Brief History of Sumerian Mythology invites the reader to delve into the Mesopotamian world through the myths that gave rise to one of the most impressive cultures in the Eastern world and that laid the foundations for the different civilizations. This work shows how the Sumerian society and, failing that, the Mesopotamian society, based their behavior on myths, since originally, the Sumerian gods created humans to serve them. Through these myths, a unique culture and society was created that was the basis of the different cultures around it. That is why all the Mesopotamian peoples have the same myths (Akkadians, Assyrians, Babylonians, etc.). Initially, these myths were transmitted orally, until the invention of cuneiform writing, typical of the Sumerians. The cosmogony of this people, which is one of the main links to talk about the Sumerian gods and myths, was based on the fact that the Earth, whose deity was Ki, was surrounded by water, the Absu ocean. At the top was the An heaven and at the bottom was the Kur or Irkalla Underworld. These deities, who lived in the Dilmun, that is, in the Home of the Gods, are the original creators of the Universe. Through the establishment of this mythology, temples dedicated to the different deities were built, where the Sumerian society would perform rites and ceremonies in their name.
