Atxaga, Bernardo

Birds, squirrels, snakes, stars and geese tell us the story of the two brothers Paulo and Daniel in the wheel of the constantly repeating nature and its seasons. Year after year, this imaginary land of Obaba appears always different and at the same time always the same, but it is a cruel scene of ambition, longing and passion between people. Paulo and, above all, his retarded brother Daniel are the victims of this human cruelty. Wrapped in the old law of nature to which we humans surrender, the suffocating world walks of Paul and Daniel merge with the world of animal fables, and also achieve a wonderful effect on the reader: a liberating sense of escape and consolation. It is difficult to guess who has put more on their side, writers with great imagination or storytellers with great talent; in fact, one rarely suits the other. The result is unique. The work of a great artist.
