Bastarda
Allison, Dorothy
In the 1950s, Greenville County, South Carolina is a wild and lush place, beautiful and terrible. It smells like nowhere else: fresh-cut grass and green apples, diapers and beer, cheap perfume and motor oil. There lives the Boatwright family, a clan of rough, hard-drinking men who shoot each other out of their trucks at the drop of a hat and unruly women who marry too soon and age too quickly. A race ruled by unemployment, instability, violence and teenage pregnancies, and who live on porches all summer, drinking iced tea, shelling beans and listening to Grandma's stories or the melodies of the crickets.
