Baluards de supèrbia
violència sexual, responsabilitat i reconciliació
Nussbaum, Martha Craven
Martha C. Nussbaum, known for her eloquence and clear moral vision, shows how sexual abuse and harassment derive from the use of people as things for one's own benefit; like other forms of exploitation, they are rooted in the unpleasant feeling of pride. Thus, the author denounces the existence of three "Citadels of pride" from whose summit men still hold all power: the judiciary, the arts and sports. In Citadels of Pride, Nussbaum explores how such pride perpetuates systemic sexual abuse, narcissism, and toxic masculinity. The courage of many has brought about some reforms, but justice remains elusive, sometimes perverted by money, power or inertia; and also by a collective desire for revenge. By analyzing the effects of the law and public policies on the definition of sexual violence, Nussbaum clarifies how gaps in the law often allow this violence to proliferate and how these gaps must be complemented with an understanding of emotions distorted that generate abuse; and why anger and revenge seldom bring about lasting change. Citadels of Pride offers a damning indictment of the male power culture that insulates powerful abusers from accountability. Nevertheless, Nussbaum offers a hopeful path forward, envisioning a future where, as victims mobilize to tell their stories and institutions pursue just and nuanced reform, we might fully recognize the equal dignity of all people.
