Autobiografía del general Franco
Vázquez Montalbán, Manuel
A writer on the verge of retirement receives the proposal to write an autobiography of General Franco. The assignment seems like sarcasm to him. His whole life has been conditioned -and not for the better- by the dictator, but the publisher trusts his qualities as an excellent writer of popular books and biographies of famous people. Marcial Pombo, a lifelong anti-Francoist, begins to write as if Franco did, but from time to time, he can't take it anymore and replies to the autobiographer. That is to say, he schizophrenically replicates himself and tries to offer as a counterpoint some notes from his personal life during the dictatorship. The result: an open work, a novel in which he is, at the same time, writer and character. Franco, some members of his family and his political environment, and many of his enemies become characters in a novel without leaving the story. Vázquez Montalbán offers us the most important narrative effort of his life with this story full of historical facts and supposed characters.
