Ryo doesn't understand why the war has taken his father away from Nagasaki. He also doesn't understand why everything has changed: the narrators' bells are no longer heard announcing their arrival, food is scarce, and his friend Reiko doesn't seem the same. Also, his mother is sad and his grandmother Saya's toughness doesn't help on a day-to-day basis. Ryo is forced to grow up, he is no longer a child and is aware of the world around him. His cat Wara will give him clues to be close to Reiko again: he will only recover the illusion if he is able to fight to achieve something extraordinary.
