The purpose of this book is to communicate the psychological perspective on two essential human phenomena, namely, learning and teaching. We focus on learning that requires understanding, thinking, deciding between options or controlling our impulses, ignoring simple associative learning, such as conditioning or learning habits. What psychological processes entail actions that require these complex psychological actions? How can children and young people be helped to improve these processes in educational situations? We focus on complex learning because they are what make us fully human, as well as being the core of what is learned in educational situations. Psychology has no simple recipes for any of these learnings, but it has generated a wealth of knowledge that provides ideas for understanding complex psychological phenomena, for inspiring teaching procedures, and for reviewing the effectiveness of those procedures. Advances in this psychological knowledge about the processes of learning and teaching, together with the need to address aspects not contemplated in the first edition of the book are the central reasons that have prompted us to offer this new, updated and expanded edition. The book aims to be used in both undergraduate and graduate university courses.
