Años de hotel
postales de la Europa de entreguerras
Roth, Joseph
During the 1920's and 1930's Joseph Roth traveled throughout Europe. His wanderings, which took him from one hotel to another, provided him with the incomparable opportunity to observe and write about the places he was visiting. In the articles he published, for the first time gathered in this anthology, Roth portrayed a continent open to change and yet clung to tradition. From the compulsive training regime of the Albanian army, Galitzia's devastating oil exploitations, migrations caused by poverty or nationalism, to the idiosyncratic characters Roth met on his travels, the lucid Hotel Years cartoons form a series of incisive postcards literary writers who bear witness to the end of an old world and the painful birth of a Europe, which, far from fulfilling some of the cherished dreams of centuries, seems to be headed hopelessly to the abyss.
