Edinburgh, 1817. In an age when the highest goal for women is to get married, Hazel Sinnett's dream is to become a surgeon. Jack Currer survives by looting graves in a city and selling them, in a city where the risk of dying on any street corner is very high. When Hazel is denied the chance to train as a doctor, she makes a deal with a renowned doctor that if she can prepare for the entrance exam by herself, she will be able to study at the University. For this she needs bodies to practice with and Jack will be the solution. But he has other problems: his friends are disappearing and the shadow of a deadly plague begins to ravage Edinburgh.
