Johnson, Josephine

When they arrive at the farm, fleeing the Recession, the three sisters know that they are treading on uncertain and shaky ground: their father warns them that the land is mortgaged. They have left their old life behind as if it never happened, and they wonder if there is anywhere in the world where there is peace or safety. They learn to till and sow the changing land, to love it and to reap its fruits, to fear drought and fire. Ten years later, they have become accustomed to the rhythm of the seasons and to a life with so few novelties that the arrival of a young peasant disrupts the fragile balance of the house forever.
