Raised in a working-class neighborhood in Sunderland in the heat of stories from a working-class family, Lucy has discovered that life in London is not what she expected. Even with a brand-new college degree, the days go by in a succession of long workdays to make ends meet, parties and hangovers. After the death of her grandfather, she decides to leave a city and some companions among whom she has always felt like a stranger and spend a season in the old family home on the Irish coast, a wild place lashed by the frozen sea where she will try to rebuild who really is. Tender, poetic, and innovative, Salty Water explores the complexities of mother-daughter relationships, the challenges of changing class identity, and how difficult it is to name the different ways we love.
