Abejas grises

Kurkov, Andrei

In Malaia Starogradovka, a town of just three streets in Ukraine's gray zone, the no man's land disputed in 2014 between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists, only two residents remain: Sergei Sergueich, a retired security inspector turned beekeeper, and Pashka Khmelenko, his friend and rival since his school days. With no electricity, little food, and the constant threat of bombing, Sergueich's only remaining pleasure is his bees, sleepy from winter. With the arrival of spring, he will have to move them away from the gray zone so that they can collect their pollen in peace, a mission that will take him to meet combatants and civilians on both sides of the battle line. His kindness and his impeccable moral compass will disarm all who cross his path, turning his saving bees into a metaphor for life in times of war.
