A raíña galega
Durán, Xosé
I was born many centuries ago. They are the Galician language, the daughter of a powerful queen and warlike kings who lived in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. I was admired in Europe and courted by kings, nobles and bishops. The troubadours played their instruments singing to me in the palaces and castles, while the gamblers cheered the festivities with me. Even the poets of Castile, Andalusia, and Provence owed it to me. With the Irmandiños I went to demolish castles of noble oppressors and with the common people I drove out the French to whom they dared to tread Galicia. But when they stopped me from writing, only the breath of the people managed to keep me alive. I look forward to you, who read me, recovering the splendid moments of glory and living proudly another thousand springs more.
